Popcorn (Hard Cut) Limiter
Popcorn & Hard Cut Limiter ECU Tuning
A popcorn limiter, also known as a hard cut limiter, is an ECU software modification commonly used on turbo diesel vehicles to create a distinctive exhaust sound when the engine reaches a predetermined RPM limit.
Unlike the smoother factory rev-limiting strategy found on many diesel vehicles, a hard cut limiter provides a much sharper intervention at the selected engine speed.
What is a Popcorn Limiter?
Most diesel vehicles use a relatively smooth RPM limiting strategy. As the engine approaches its maximum permitted speed, the ECU progressively controls fuel delivery to prevent the engine from revving beyond the programmed limit.
A popcorn or hard cut limiter changes this behaviour by introducing a much sharper fuel cut at a predetermined RPM.
This rapid intervention creates the distinctive exhaust note that gives the modification its commonly used name – the popcorn limiter.
How Does a Hard Cut Limiter Work?
The modification is carried out within the engine ECU software.
Depending on the ECU and engine, the calibration can involve:
- Changing the factory RPM limiting strategy
- Setting an appropriate hard cut RPM limit
- Modifying fuel-injection behaviour at the limiter
- Calibrating the limiter specifically for the engine and ECU
The RPM limit should be selected according to the individual engine rather than applying the same setting to every vehicle.
Does a Popcorn Limiter Increase Power?
No. A popcorn limiter is primarily a sound-related ECU modification and does not increase engine power.
If additional power and torque are required, a popcorn limiter can potentially be combined with an appropriate performance remap where supported by the vehicle.
Vehicle-Specific Calibration
Not every diesel engine or ECU is suitable for a popcorn limiter.
Before carrying out the modification, the vehicle and ECU should be identified to determine whether the required limiter strategy is supported and whether the modification is appropriate for that particular engine.
At Redline Remaps, popcorn and hard cut limiter software is calibrated according to the individual vehicle rather than using a universal RPM setting.
