Stop-Start Disable & ECU Coding
Automatic stop-start systems are fitted to many modern vehicles to reduce unnecessary engine idling. When the vehicle comes to a stop, the system can automatically switch the engine off and restart it when the driver is ready to move again.
While the system can help reduce fuel consumption and emissions in certain driving conditions, some drivers simply prefer their engine to remain running unless they choose to switch it off themselves.
How Does Stop-Start Work?
The stop-start system uses information from several vehicle systems to determine when the engine can safely be switched off and restarted.
Depending on the vehicle, this can include:
- Battery condition and state of charge
- Engine and coolant temperature
- Vehicle speed
- Brake or clutch pedal position
- Steering input
- Air-conditioning requirements
- Electrical load
- Engine management conditions
If the required conditions are met, the engine automatically switches off when the vehicle becomes stationary and restarts when the driver prepares to move away.
Why Disable Stop-Start?
The most common reason is simply driver preference.
Some drivers find repeated engine stopping and restarting inconvenient, particularly in heavy traffic, junctions and other situations where the vehicle may only remain stationary for a short period.
Reasons customers may prefer the function disabled include:
- Repeated stop-start operation in traffic
- Preference for continuous engine operation
- Unwanted engine shutdown at short stops
- Modified or specialist vehicle applications
- Preference to control the function manually
Stop-Start ECU Coding
Depending on the vehicle, the automatic stop-start function may be configurable through ECU coding or vehicle software.
Different vehicles use different strategies. Where supported, options can include:
- Disabling automatic stop-start operation
- Changing the default stop-start setting
- Enabling last-state memory
- Retaining the driver's previously selected setting
With last-state memory, for example, switching stop-start off using the factory button can allow the vehicle to remember that selection rather than automatically enabling the system again when the vehicle is restarted.
Does Stop-Start Coding Increase Performance?
No. Disabling stop-start does not increase engine power or torque.
This is primarily a convenience and driver-preference modification, allowing the vehicle's stop-start behaviour to be configured differently where supported.
Is My Vehicle Supported?
Stop-start configuration varies considerably between manufacturers, models and vehicle control systems. Some vehicles can be coded directly, while others may require a different software solution or may not support permanent configuration changes.
