Pops & Bangs ECU Tuning
Pops and bangs tuning, also commonly known as a crackle map, is an ECU software modification designed to create a more aggressive exhaust sound during throttle lift-off and overrun.
The calibration modifies the way the engine manages ignition and fuelling during overrun conditions, producing the distinctive pops, crackles and bangs heard through the exhaust system.
How Does a Pops & Bangs Map Work?
During normal driving, when the accelerator is released, the ECU typically reduces or cuts fuel delivery as part of its standard overrun strategy.
On suitable petrol engines, a pops and bangs calibration can modify this behaviour along with ignition timing to create the desired exhaust sound.
Depending on the engine and ECU, calibration may involve:
- Adjusting overrun fuelling
- Retarding ignition timing under specific conditions
- Changing overrun strategies
- Setting appropriate RPM and operating ranges
- Controlling when the effect becomes active
The exact strategy varies considerably between engines and ECU types, which is why the calibration should be matched to the individual vehicle.
Different Levels of Pops & Bangs
Not every customer wants the same result.
Depending on the vehicle and exhaust setup, the calibration can potentially be configured to produce anything from subtle crackles during overrun to a much more aggressive pops and bangs effect.
The final sound is also heavily influenced by the vehicle's exhaust system. A standard exhaust, sports exhaust and modified exhaust can produce very different results from the same type of ECU calibration.
Does a Pops & Bangs Map Increase Power?
No. Pops and bangs tuning is primarily a sound-related modification rather than a performance upgrade.
Where appropriate, it can be incorporated alongside a performance remap, but the pops and bangs feature itself should not be considered a method of increasing engine power or torque.
Important Considerations
Pops and bangs tuning increases thermal stress within the exhaust system compared with the vehicle's standard overrun strategy.
Excessively aggressive calibrations can place additional stress on components such as:
- Catalytic converters
- Exhaust valves
- Turbochargers
- Exhaust manifolds
- Silencers and other exhaust components
For this reason, we don't believe in applying the most aggressive possible calibration simply to produce the loudest result.
The vehicle, engine, ECU and exhaust setup should all be considered before determining whether pops and bangs tuning is appropriate.
